- Prepare for this transition by talking with your child about school
- Always tell your child that you are leaving
- Tell your child when you will be coming back
- at lunchtime, after naptime, after school
- Give your child a hug, a kiss, and a wave goodbye
- Be friendly and firm
- Do NOT prolong the goodbye
- Being confident at separation shows your child that you are leaving them with a trusted adult
- Show confidence by making a positive statement about the day’s activities, “Have fun at school!”
- Once you’ve said goodbye, do not turn around
- Be consistent in your goodbye routine
- It is important to be on time when picking up your child to build confidence that you will keep your word
