  • Always tell your child that you are leaving
  • Tell your child when you will be coming back
    • at lunchtime, after naptime, after school
  • Give your child a hug, a kiss, and a wave goodbye
    • Be friendly and firm
  • Do NOT prolong the goodbye
    • Being confident at separation shows your child that you are leaving them with a trusted adult
    • Show confidence by making a positive statement about the day’s activities, “Have fun at school!”
    • Once you’ve said goodbye, do not turn around
  • Be consistent in your goodbye routine
  • It is important to be on time when picking up your child to build confidence that you will keep your word
